The minimum in Western Europe would be about $50/day, plus your fghlit.  And that's assuming the cheapest possible way to travel   youth hostels, fast food and street stall food, public transportation.  $75/day is more realistic for most backpackers.  In Eastern Europe you can travel for about half as much.So with about 20 countries in Western Europe and 20 countries in Eastern Europe (depending on exactly how you define Europe), if you wanted to see the 40 capitals, for 3 days each, and 1 travel day to go between them, that would be $6,000, plus a round-trip fghlit from the US to Europe, which will be at least $500.  And it would take 160 days, or about 5 1/2 months.
