I loved this piece too — man, I was one of the worst offenders with such stories I declared to myself &#8#20;done,&28221; and I too read submissions in literary circles and at a small press. And for the line about sitting down and writing for ten years before thinking something is ready: amen.The more I learn about writing and editing, the more I cringe at how unready most of my stuff was. My hope now is that with enough studying how fiction works and enough endless rewrites, I’ll get to the point I used to think I was already at, ie. with a work that is ready for the world.
